Occupy Geriatrics: Seniors in Walkers Shut Down Local Bank of America

KCBS reports that a small group of senior citizens between the ages of 69 and 82 successfully shut down a Bank of America in Bernal Heights on Thursday with nothing more than walkers and oxygen tanks.
So the seniors took a seat outside the bank where they explained their demands, which were no different than every other occupiers: They want lower fees, and they want the bank to pay higher taxes and stop the foreclosures. “We’re upset about what the banks are doing, particularly in our neighborhood and neighboring areas, in evicting people and foreclosing on their homes,” 80-year-old Tita Caldwell told KCBS reporters. “We’re upset because the banks are raising their rates, because it really affects seniors who are on a fixed income.”

Government Wants You to Think its Records Are Private—They’re Not

Public offices belong to the people. The records in them belong to the people. But effective government requires that officials ought to be able to define the conditions under which access to public offices and records is allowed in order not to cripple day-to-day government. The protesters should understand and accept this. But they should also insist on access. The more the press and the public ignore public records the more secretive government becomes.
City after city has behaved as if the parks are the lawns of a secretariat, an official elite. The parks are in fact the village greens on which our Founding Fathers anticipated we would assemble and give our sentiments and complaints voice. Having witnessed this denial of the parks to the public that owns them we should now logically ask ourselves whether government at all levels believes it can deny us access to our public buildings and their records.

Is Occupy Wall Street reviving the 99 Percent? I sure hope so. It is time for the sheeple to wake up.

U.N. Envoy: U.S. Isn’t Protecting Occupy Protesters’ Rights

The United Nations envoy for freedom of expression is drafting an official communication to the U.S. government demanding to know why federal officials are not protecting the rights of Occupy demonstrators whose protests are being disbanded — sometimes violently — by local authorities.
Frank La Rue, who serves as the U.N. “special rapporteur” for the protection of free expression, told HuffPost in an interview that the crackdowns against Occupy protesters appear to be violating their human and constitutional rights.“I believe in city ordinances and I believe in maintaining urban order,” he said Thursday. “But on the other hand I also believe that the state — in this case the federal state — has an obligation to protect and promote human rights.”“If I were going to pit a city ordinance against human rights, I would always take human rights,” he continued.
“Citizens have the right to dissent with the authorities, and there’s no need to use public force to silence that dissension,” he said.
